Peel Square, South Kilburn: Regeneration through relationships, expression and art

In the heart of South Kilburn, a fragmented and neglected council estate area symbolised disconnection and underinvestment. By carefully analysing the landscape character, in collaboration with a wider team and the community, Outerspace designed a welcoming and inclusive civic space.

The result is Peel Square: a living public space that fuses art, memory and movement into a civic hub, crowned by a sculptural centrepiece that echoes the voices of those to whom it is home.

Design Response:

Sculpting belonging from memory and place

From the start, this project invited a deeper question: how can design help a community reclaim its identity and joy?

Working closely with residents, artists, Brent’s cultural team and a writer-in-residence, we co-created a landmark sculpture within a grove of cherry trees. Rising from the square, abstract metal ‘leaves’ are etched with local memories and reflections, gathered through intimate dialogue.

Together, they form a permanent, poetic canopy of shared voices. The sculpture is the summit of a journey of curved benches that gently draw people in. A narrative centrepiece within a democratic space.

“The art sculpture was a really rewarding commission, a product of collaboration and design with the community. In fact, the most meaningful design comes from listening first and shaping ideas together”

Giovanni Grigoletti

Softness, structure and seasonal change

Materials were selected for durability and warmth, balancing civic clarity with emotional resonance. Layered planting frames the sculpture with softness and seasonal change, while generous paving and elegant seating encourage lingering and ease of movement.

Legacy:

A civic stage for everyday connection

Peel Square is now a beloved gathering place, alive with markets, quiet conversations and children playing under the cherry blossom. The sculpture has become a beacon: a physical expression of co-authorship and local pride.

A square authored by many, with a proud present and a flourishing future.
