Designing with life in mind
Landscape is the beating heart of community, where architecture and townscape all come together in lived experience. That’s why we design public realm with feeling, shaping living environments that hold memory, invite movement and foster belonging across generations.
Our approach to landscape architecture balances wellbeing against impact, for both humans and nature. While understanding the social and psychological needs of people, we strive to support ecology with informed creativity and care, designing in harmony with nature’s systems.
We work across scales and sectors, from masterplans to local spaces and gardens, crafting places that belong in time, place and community. Our material choices are sustainable and based on principles of the circular economy. Our planting strategies are layered, seasonal and habitat rich. And our schemes are engineered for longevity; low-carbon and beautiful by design.
Frameworks for belonging
From masterplans to town centre regeneration strategies and character assessments, we strive to achieve a sense of belonging.
That starts with connecting to the spirit of a place. Our masterplans are based upon streets and spaces, with solutions that belong to their townscape and community context, whether densely urbanised city centres, or urban fringe and green fields beyond. Architecture comes later. A well thought out fabric can be filled in with the appropriate scale and massing, maximising social, biodiversity and financial value.
Our townscape studies identify character, movement and the quality of the sense of arrival. We then connect urban nodes, gateway sites and key developments through our ‘lily pad’ strategy, creating sociable, walkable, biodiverse routes that set the stage for towns to thrive. When the framework is built around belonging, everything else can flourish.
Design through dialogue
For us, the real client is each community we serve. So engagement isn’t a tick-box exercise or a bolt-on. It’s where we begin.
Our ‘Design through Dialogue’ tool invites genuine participation for all. Through workshops, walkabouts, pop-ups, storytelling sessions and targeted outreach at events, everyone has a voice. Everyone is heard. Because revealing what matters to local people in their everyday experience of the spaces and places they use uncovers insights that the planning might easily miss.
Getting this balance right, between community involvement and design creativity, is a win for everyone: Communities shape their places, while inspiring better ideas on our sketchpads. And with everyone on the same team, clients enjoy a smooth path to success.
We’re here to enable a community’s vision, not impose our own. It’s their place, their story and we take pride in bringing that to life.
Outerspace is a collective of thinkers, makers, collaborators and listeners. We come from diverse backgrounds, but we’re united by a shared belief: that great design is rooted in care, curiosity and humility. It’s this mindset that helps us create places that truly belong, flourish and thrive.
Here is the unique team that makes it all possible, each with their own perspectives, skills and stories.
Overlooking Teddington Lock and the River Thames, the Boathouse is more than a studio, it’s a community.
What was for one hundred and sixty years a hive of boat-building activity, our Grade II Listed Building is now a hub of creativity, with the river outside infusing energy and calm into our studio.
Away from the desk and around the table, inspirations are shared, ideas take shape, pencils are sharpened and put to work, all within the historic walls of our studio. It’s an environment that’s imaginative, grounded, and genuinely collaborative. A place where people feel free to make wild suggestions and challenge ideas.
We hire for talent, yes. But never at the expense of kindness. Ours is a curious, supportive team that knows the best thinking comes from openness, not ego. This spirit shapes everything we do and the way we do it.
So beyond being a creative studio, the Boathouse is a place for collaboration, inspiration, and support, where free thought is encouraged, every contribution counts and teamwork trumps hierarchy. Here, the principles of co-working and community form the foundation of our thriving team.
In Outerspace, we don’t design for applause. But being recognised for our commitment to social impact, ecological integrity and sustainability is always appreciated.
Our work across Urban Design, Landscape Architecture and Community Engagement has been widely celebrated. From major regeneration schemes to education, workplace and the public realm, our inspirational design and expert technical delivery has earned accolades in each sector.
